Lady Windermere’s Fan

Since I’ve read The Picture Of Dorian Gray in German, Oscar Wilde has the honour to be called “my favourite author”. Isn’t it a kind of weird typical emotion for me?

For my school leaving examination, I chose “Oscar Wilde” as my special subject. Well, damn, I failed. But only because I haven’t read the two other books (Lady Windemere’s Fan and The Importance Of Being Earnest). Now, during my community service, I have enough time to read, and so, I actually read the book about Lady Windemere’s Fan, and, by Jove, I really like it.

The play deals with the topic of lies, conspiracies and love. Lady Windermere experiences, that her husband gives money to a woman called Mrs. Erlynne. He doens’t want to tell her, why and for what that woman gets the money. But Lord Windermere insisted on the wish to invite Mrs. Erlynne to Lady Windermere’s birthday ball too. Jealous Lady Windermere isn’t able to avoid it. But she really hates the presence of this woman, who seems to take her husband away. But in the end, everybody must admit, that these Mrs. Erlynne us a good woman.

Characteristic of Oscar Wilde is this humour, which is very … erm … Wilde’ish. For an advanced learner (like me) Lady Windermere’s Fan is a good readable book. According to The Picture of Dorian Gray I loved the parts, where the Victorian-era “Society” begin to philosophise. And I’m looking forward to my next reading Bunbury.

Well, I must admit, it’s hard to say something about Oscar Wilde, his life was too wild. I have to refer to Wikipedia.

My Opinion

Lady Windermere’s Fan is a very funny and interesting play. The typical cynical tongue of Oscar Wilde, the hilarious characters and the profounded story at the end of the play let me arrive at the conclusion, that Oscar Wilde isn’t the very best author ever. The Picture Of Dorian Gray was perfect. One of the best books I’ve ever read. But I really don’t like plays. Although Wilde wrote wonderful ones. Lady Windermere’s Fan is absolutely recommended if you like the Victorian Era.
